Water Content Effects on Gas Volume and Energy Content

Gas volume (Mscf) and energy content (MMBtu) calculations for a lease or well depend on water content and gas composition. Errors in matching volume and Btu content to the same water-saturation basis routinely cause under-reported royalties — this session shows engineers and accountants how to get it right.

In this session, Matthew covers:
  • Why gas is priced in $/MMBtu but measured in Mscf — and why that mismatch matters
  • Applicable standards: GPA Midstream 2172, API MPMS Ch. 14.5, GPA 2145
  • Dry vs. As-Delivered vs. Wet/Saturated Btu Content — adjust volume or Btu content, never both
  • Understanding VCF (Volume Correction Factor) and Vratio for converting between saturation states
  • How pressure and temperature change a gas's water content
  • Saturation at standard conditions vs. at flowing/meter conditions
  • Limits of chromatographic analysis in detecting water vapor
  • Case study: a 22-well commingled facility and the risk of royalty misallocation
  • Auditing gas plant statements: common water/Btu content errors GLO finds in the field
  • Worked example: the real dollar impact of applying a wet Btu content in error
