Is ethics contrived or real? Business and regulatory pressures can cloud ethical behavior, and consequences vary by jurisdiction. What defines appropriate judgment and reporting in your organization — and would your behavior be acceptable elsewhere?
Drawing from nearly four decades in the field — including sensitive reserves reporting for national oil companies and board-level delivery at A.P. Møller-Maersk — Richard Smith brings hard-earned perspective on the daily ethical decisions petroleum engineers face, and the frameworks that hold up under pressure.
In this session, Richard Smith walks through the technical and also commercial framework for CO₂ enhanced oil.

Reserves Manager
Richard Smith is a registered Petroleum Engineer in the State of Colorado with nearly four decades of experience spanning both North American and international operations. He served as President of Integrated Reservoir Management, Inc. in Denver, Colorado from 1993 to 2018 — simultaneously taking on roles with major international operators including Maersk Oil and Gas.
At Maersk, Richard was appointed Director of the International Petroleum Development Division (IPDD), an elite rapid-response team responsible for identifying, formulating, and submitting acquisition plans and field development programs across global assets. He was the only USA-licensed Petroleum Engineer in the Maersk organization.
As Reserves Manager, he built Maersk’s first-ever SPE-compliant reserves program from the ground up — assembling an eight-person team, managing nine countries, and delivering compliant 1P/2P/3P reserve and resource reports within just 15 months. He managed and delivered annual reserves reports directly to the A.P. Møller-Maersk boards for nearly five years.
Recognized as a subject matter expert in reserves, integrated studies, reservoir simulation, field management, and litigation, he has served as advisor, manager, and consultant to national oil companies including PDVSA, ADNOC/ADMA/ZADCO (UAE), Kuwait National Oil Company, and Qatar Petroleum.
